The provinces of KwaZulu Natal and Western Cape were both awarded the Best Performing Province category during the Govan Mbeki Awards ceremony held at Gallagher Convention Centre last night, 09 November 2017.
“Mission accomplished. We have successfully defended our three year reign as the Top Performing Province in sustainable human settlements delivery”, said Mbulelo Baloyi, KZN Human Settlements spokesperson. “Fourth time in a row, what more does one want”, added Mbulelo struggling to contain his excitement.
Contestants in this category were assessed on a number of aspects including, the increased number of households with access to quality accommodation, basic services and secure tenure, improved access to social services and economic opportunities within the reasonable distance, increased access to private finance for housing development and efficient utilisation of land for human settlements development.
The two provinces have met most of their planned targets in different programmes like, rental housing, title deeds, military veterans housing, job creation, rural and farmworkers housing programme.
The provinces also showed consistency in terms of performance in all programmes.
