Rural housing important in dealing with urbanisation

Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu has encouraged the provision of necessary services in the rural areas in order to ease the rate of urbanisation.

“Let us provide our people in the rural areas with dignity and shelter and encourage them to remain productive on the land so that our economy remains a truly mixed economy – where the agricultural sector can once again thrive. In this scenario once the rural areas thrive and have economic viability the migration to cities will be reduced. I truly hope that this would be part of our answer”, said Minister Sisulu.

Minister Sisulu was speaking at the North West Human Settlements Indaba held on the 23-24 March 2016 at Rustenburg.

The two-day Indaba held under the theme “Effective planning to turn Bokone Bophirima into a construction site through the implementation of the Villages Townships and Small Dorpies (VTSDs) approach”, identified and discussed barriers that hinder sustainable and effective delivery of houses and came up with plans aimed at addressing the situation, concentrating on the rural areas.
“I wish the initiative in the province well in this regard because it would then be our pilot project on a multi-pronged strategy to deal with escalating demand for houses in the urban areas. We are now at the point of drafting our legislation on Human Settlements and this initiative of revitalising the rural areas can prove our theories correct when it succeeds”, added Minister Sisulu.

Amongst the dignatories who attended the event are Premier of Bokone Bophirima, Supra Mahumapelo, Minister of Human Settlements, Lindiwe Sisulu, Traditional leaders, Executive Mayors and Mayors, Councillors and housing developers.
